Karen Dubrofsky was born and raised in Montreal, where in 1982, she graduated from McGill University specializing in accounting.
At the age of 23, Karen was suddenly diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease. She was ill for seven years and dependent on various medications. Taking things into her own hands, Karen educated herself about the value of health and the importance of good food and nutrition. Within two months of transforming her diet and eating habits, Karen was able to eliminate all medications and successfully overcome her disease.
Now healthy, Karen is happily married with three wonderful children. Karen’s direct personal experience has taught her the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise. This experience triggered Karen’s passion and dedication to raising funds for health-related causes.
In 2003-2005, Karen and a close friend raised $500,000 for the Centre for Colon and Rectal Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).
Following that success, Karen created her first cookbook, Montreal Cooks, which was published in October 2007 with funds going to support Women’s Oncology at MUHC. The book featured recipes from Montreal’s finest Chefs and has raised over $700,000. Montreal Cooks was on “The Montreal Gazette” Bestseller list for 43 weeks.
Through Montreal Cooks, and now Cooking with Canada’s Best, Karen has discovered a way to combine her passion for cooking and appreciation of fine foods, with her desire to fundraise and make a difference.
Karen is presently working on a healthy vegan-style book with co-author Gigi Cohen in Montreal and a television series is also in the planning stages.
